Interim Executive Director or CEO Leadership

Effective interim management provides solid bridge leadership to address transition issues, coordinate staff efforts, support board governance, communicate with donors and grantors, maintain internal controls, and provide positive, productive, external communications regarding the leadership transition.

There are three different ways Leadership Tactics can structure the relationship between Executive Transition and Leadership Continuity consulting and the interim executive director. We have done it all three ways.

  1. Leadership Tactics, Inc. signs a consulting contract for the executive transition services plus one of the principals signs a temporary employment contract to serve as the on-site interim executive director.  This is our preferred relationship, if capacity is available; to achieve the most cost effective and coordinated level of services. If a principal is unavailable to serve as an interim executive director, Leadership Tactics may assist in identifying an experienced professional to serve in this role.

  2. Leadership Tactics Inc. signs a consulting contract for the executive transition services and works closely with an internal staff or temporary employee who is serving as the organization’s interim executive director.

  3. One of the Leadership Tactics, Inc. principals signs a temporary employment contract to serve as the organization’s interim executive director and works closely with an outside firm contracted to conduct the executive search and other transition services.

The interim CEO serves as a trusted guest leader, appreciating the best an organization has to offer. A transition period offers an organization the time to embrace history; explore future options; face tough choices if needed; renew linkages; address critical system changes; commit to focused direction; and usher in new leadership.

On site services may range from several hours a week to full assumption of the executive’s responsibilities. Often a 20-hour a week, on site, four to six month contract is optimal to build a solid platform to restore balance for new beginnings. We typically limit the interim period to not exceed a nine month period. We recommend the interim executive director services are structured as a temporary employment salaried contract and priced in relationship to both size of the organization and number of hours.
